Holland's famous Tulip Time Festival hosts more than a million visitors for what is one of the largest flower festivals in the country.
Although small by numbers, Holland has a community population draw of over 100,000. It is also the Home of Hope College a small but highly respected institution of higher learning adjacent to the downtown. Millions of dollars in private and public funds are currently being implemented into what is regarded as phase two of public projects that began with a heated 'snow melt' system under the downtown streets and sidewalks in 1986.
A recent example, is the new '8th Street Market Place', sandwiched between the downtown and Lake Macatawa, a short distance away. This is the most highly touted farmer's market in West Michigan. Produce farmers now sell their products every Wednesday and Saturday shaded under contemporary ridged awnings suspended over wide walks of brick pavers hiding a network of snowmelt plumbing just under their surface.
A new and modern city police facility stands across the street along with a companion courthouse now under construction.
Scheduled to open in the fall of 2006 is Hope College's new enclosed Devos Stadium situated on the eastern edge of downtown.
On the western edge of downtown, Lake Macatawa bridges Holland with Lake Michigan about 7 miles away. This provides wonderful inland boating but also access to the 'big lake' for the more adventuresome. The beaches of Holland are among the best in the country!
Visitors should plan on spending extra time when visiting Holland, Michigan. Bring your bikes to enjoy riding any part of the scenic miles of bike paths in and around the city. Definitely bring your swimsuits to enjoy our new aquatic center or Holland State beach, one of the finest in the Midwest. There you can enjoy 'Big Red' a most distinctive and unusual lighthouse. Or just stroll the brick sidewalks in the beautifully renovated downtown. Sit down and relax for a cup of coffee or dinner at one of many outdoor tables provided by the restaurants and coffee shops.
Moynihan Gallery is located in the first block of the one-way portion of 8th street (8th St. is the main street through the downtown retail area). Look for us in the middle of the block between College and Central on the south (left) side of the street. Get a map to Moynihan Gallery & Framing.
Summer is a great time to enjoy outdoor dining at the Curragh Irish Pub on the corner of 8th Street and College.
