Kate
Moynihan working her palette knife painting oils paints on canvas
Kate Moynihan relishes color! For twelve years
in her career as a nurse Kate was fascinated by behavioral response to color. Returning to school
to further her art education kate concentrated on color relationships and now enjoys using color as an
anchor in her artwork.
In addition to the strong use of color, Kate is
known for her application of texture. Painting with watercolors, the use of texture is applied by mixing rice
papers, ink, and occasionally, acrylic. Tactile layers are achieved in oil paints using a palette knife
technique.
Kate’s birch tree designs are her trademark images. The
tree’s craggy bark fit the textural techniques of Kate’s style. As a Michigan native, Kate is fond of this
wetland tree but throughout the years the motif has taken on the identity of other geographical trees being called
a poplar, aspen, or cottonwood. Kate’s impressionistic style easily allows for viewer’s imagination. “My spirit is
lifted when someone takes ownership of one of my paintings. I love it to become theirs.”
Floral, dunes and landscapes are other
favorites Kate paints in her impressionistic style. She is also an accomplished abstract artist using her
papers and textiles to create geometry and color harmony. Her original artwork is sold in her retail gallery
in the heart of historic downtown Holland, Michigan. Many other galleries in Michigan have reproductions of some of her works
in giclee limited edition format. More of her work can be viewed and ordered on-line through the Artaissance Web Site...a company specializing in decor
art.
