January - Moynihan Memos

After miles of walking shows...

Kate and Allison have returned from several markets and found multitudes of great new items for your home and have added new designs and styles to several lines we already carry.  One of the lines we're excited to expand is a handmade pottery line from Bulgaria.  Pottery is one of the richest legacies of the Bulgarian people.  According to Bulgarian folk mythology, the details of a potters work were considered so secretive that only family members were allowed to learn the craft. Many pieces incorporate native images of mountains and villages while others use intense and saturated color to form abstract designs. The work is functional as well as sculptural, and melds an
old world form with contemporarystyling.  The pieces have a bright and distinctive look that always get noticed.  All the pieces are hand formed and painted; therefore variation in color, shape and size will occur.

Have you hugged your mug today?

Warm up on these cold winter nights with a hot drink in artists Bob and Corina Nehers original Handwarmer mug.  This unique mug is available in either a right or left handed version to suit everyone.  If your hands are cold the special inverted handle will keep them warm.  If the mug is too hot at first you can comfortably hold the outer flange.  The mug is microwave and dishwasher safe and is lead free.  It is available in seven hand-painted glazes.

Gallery Walk -
Friday and Saturday, February, 8 and 9
Festive Friday Night begins at 6:00 p.m.

A Weekend of Art and Music
A "can't miss" event is planned for February 8th and 9th.  Six downtown galleries have commissioned local artists to hand paint or embellish five retired violins and one viola to be auctioned off during the annual winter Gallery Walk.  The violins and viola have been on display since November in the galleries and at several symphony events during the holiday season.  The auction is to benefit the Holland Symphony Orchestra.  The violins are on exhibit and open for bids at each gallery until 4 pm February 9th.  Each gallery will host the artist who created the violin in their store the evening of February 8th from 6pm to 9pm.  Members of the symphony will be on hand at each gallery that evening to provide music.  Current bid is $300.

For your pleasure there are three artists featured during Gallery Walk.

  Friday, February 8th, 6pm-9pm:

Kathleen VanTubergen, creator of "The Violin in the Window", a wood burned image, will be here to meet and talk about her violin based on the painting of the same title by artist Otto Franz Scholderer.  Kathleen teaches at Evergreen Commons and creates many murals for events.

David Lee Webb will be making his one-of-a-kind Australian opal jewelry pieces.  The Australian opal is renowned for its beauty as well as its durability.  Please visit our December Moynihan Memo for more information on David's work.

Saturday, February 9th, 12pm-4pm:

Marjorie Johnston, the creator of the truly original "Vessel Dolls", will be sharing stories of her found object created dolls.  Each Vessel Doll is made of objects Marjorie has collected at yard sales, estate sales, antique stores and from friends and family members.  Marjorie lovingly fills the dolls and each one has a special story based on the contents and components used to create him or her.  She also has empty Vessel Dolls that you can fill with your own treasured memories to create an heirloom piece.

Debut 2008 Tulip Time Festival Print - Gallery Walk Night
When artist Yolanda Gonzales asked her daughter not to draw on the wall, the little girl replied, "I'm sorry.  I can't help drawing."  That's a trait shared by her mother, who says, "I don't know any other way but to make art."

Yolanda is this year's Tulip Time Festival artist.  Her clients include, local and national businesses:  Opera Grand Rapids, the Nokomis Foundation, the Grand Rapids Community Foundation and Herman Miller, and she remains active in the local art community, including UICA, the Grand Rapids Art Museum, and the Red Thread Project.  Her work has been seen in On-The-Town, Real Simple, and Bicycling magazines, as well as Print, Communication Arts, Martin Dawber's Big Book of Fashion Illustration, and the American Illustration 25 Online Portfolio.
Stop by February 8th to see the many ways we have framed the poster and giclee.  Unframed prints also for sale.
